January’s birth flowers are the carnation and snowdrop. Meaning admiration, love, hope, purity, luck and rebirth.

Carnations are one of the few flowers that can bloom in cool weather, as long as temperatures remain just above freezing. Carnations are one of the most charming flowers known for its ruffled petals and wide array of colors. They have a delicate clove-like scent and are known for their long-lasting flowers. It is believed that the first carnation bloomed when Mary’s tears hit the earth as she wept for Jesus when he carried his cross.

As with most flowers, different colored carnations have different meanings.

Light red carnations symbolize admiration

Dark red carnations symbolize deep love and affection

White carnations symbolize purity and luck

Pink carnations symbolize gratitude

Snowdrops bloom in the winter months, between January and March. In the wild, they typically cover large patches, blanketing the earth with swatches of white. The sight of snowdrop shoots poking up through snow-covered ground is one of the first signs that spring is near. It was once thought that their leaves were thermogenic, producing their own heat in order to melt through the snow.
